On Tuesday 31st March, our students had the opportunity to visit Bideford College, where they were introduced to the wide range of opportunities available within the school’s Sixth Form. The visit offered a valuable insight into the academic and personal development routes students can pursue after Year 11.

The day was led by a spokesperson from Exeter University, supported by several current university students studying a variety of courses. Their presence brought real-life experience into the room, helping our students understand what further education can look like from multiple perspectives.

Throughout the day, the Exeter team encouraged students to reflect on their own strengths, interests, and aspirations. Activities focused on key questions such as:

  • What subjects do you enjoy the most?

  • What skills come naturally to you?

  • Which careers align with your interests and abilities?

  • What pathways can help you reach your long-term goals?

Students explored how different jobs require different skill sets, and how their current school subjects can support their future ambitions. They were also guided through the various routes available after GCSEs, including A-levels, vocational qualifications, apprenticeships, and university degrees.

A highlight of the visit was the open Q&A session, where our students asked thoughtful questions about university life, course choices, workload, and the transition from school to higher education. The Exeter students shared honest and relatable insights, helping to demystify what life beyond secondary school can look like.

Overall, the visit to Bideford College Sixth Form was an inspiring and informative experience. It encouraged our students to think more deeply about their futures and gave them practical tools to begin shaping their next steps with confidence.
