Young Carers

Braunton Academy was selected as a pilot school to take part in an exciting England-wide initiative organised by the Carers Trust and The Children’s Society.  The programme aims to support Young Carers in schools.

We are delighted to have received the Young Carers in Schools Bronze Award as recognition of the support we offer to our students who are registered as Young Carers.  We are one of the first schools in the country to receive the award.

What is a Young Carer?

A Young Carer is a child under 18 who regularly helps to look after a family member or friend who is disabled, ill, has a mental health condition or addiction problem.

Children may engage in:

Practical tasks – cooking, housework and shopping

Physical care – lifting or helping someone use the stairs

Personal care – washing, dressing, helping with toilet needs

Managing the family budget – collecting benefits and prescriptions

Managing medication

Looking after younger siblings

Helping someone communicate

Braunton Academy can support Young Carers.  If you, or a family member, needs support please contact

Elise Woodhead or Kirsty De Groot on 01271 812221 or email ewoodhead@braunton.academy or kdegroot@braunton.academy

All contact will be treated in the strictest confidence.

We can help you  by listening to you when you want to talk, giving you information and advice, arrange trips and activities to give you a break from your caring responsibilities and support you through any troubles you may have in school (if the problems are because you are caring for someone)
