Remote Learning

Remote Learning during a full or partial school closure

We are aware that we need to prepare our curriculum for several different scenarios that could impact the Academy and students’ learning. We have plans to adapt our curriculum to any of the scenarios below.

Scenario

Scenario 1

Small numbers of students absent from school due to self-isolation

Scenario 2

Individual class(es) or year group

Scenario 3

Whole School Remote Learning in the event of a local or national lockdown

What we will provide to ensure continuity of learning:

Students need to remain at home but would be able to continue with the sequence of lessons for each of their subjects, by accessing the work via Google Classroom.

Lessons and activities for that day are uploaded by class teachers to Google Classroom by 8.45 that morning.

Students would follow their normal timetable at home, completing their own independent learning during Period 6.

Lessons and activities for that day are delivered live by Class Teachers on Microsoft Teams.

Students would follow their normal timetable at home and join the lesson by clicking on the invite in their school email calendar. Period 6 is an opportunity for students to work independently at home, consolidating the work that they did that day.

Remote Learning - Core Elements

  • Students will largely follow their normal timetable each day.

  • Lessons will ‘mirror’ the work that would have been taught had the lesson taken place in school.

  • Appropriate teacher explanations, questioning and modelling will support new learning when delivering online, live lessons.

  • Work will be set for students through Google Classroom.

  • Regular ‘live’ online Q&A / discussion-type ‘catch-up’ meetings will be offered to students as they progress through each unit of work, so they can check their understanding, ask for help and support, and clarify any key learning with their teacher.

  • Tutors will schedule regular ‘live’ online meetings for their tutees to check on their wellbeing as well as their engagement and how they are progressing with their learning.

  • Teachers will communicate through ClassCharts to give ‘Merits’ for good work, feedback and messages of concern where work may be missing.

Information for Parents - guidelines for parents during remote learning

Provide support for your children by:

  • Agreeing and establishing routines and clear expectations for learning.

  • Defining a space for your child to work in and ensuring that their computer is placed in a shared or visible area of the home.

  • Regularly monitoring communications from teachers and checking Class Charts.

  • Beginning and ending each day with a check-in using the sorts of questions parents would normally ask if they had been at school all day (e.g. What did you learn today?).

  • Taking an active role in helping your children process their learning

  • Encouraging a routine of physical activity and/or exercise.

  • Supervising your child’s online engagement and check in with your child regularly to help them manage stress.

  • Monitoring how much time your child is spending online.

  • Keeping your children social during isolation but set rules around their social media interactions.

Information for Students - Guidelines for students during remote learning:

  • Establish a daily routine and use your existing timetable to plan your ‘school’ day at home

  • Create an effective learning space in a common area such as the kitchen or lounge room that is safe, quiet, comfortable and free from distractions

  • Regularly monitor Google Classroom, emails and ClassCharts to check for announcements and feedback from teachers

  • Complete the work as set by your teachers

  • Complete tasks with integrity and make sure that you are always doing your best work

  • Work hard to meet timelines, commitments and due dates

  • Communicate proactively with your teachers if you cannot meet deadlines or require additional support

  • Maintain a healthy wellbeing by taking breaks throughout the day and participating in some exercise or another activity away from the computer screen (reading, creative activity, play).

  • Maintain a familiar schedule in regard to regularly eating and drinking

  • Comply with any school policies such as Behaviour Management, Anti-Bullying, Acceptable use of information technologies, Student Code of Conduct as they still apply to the way that you behave and interact with the teacher and students in an online environment.

  • Seek out and communicate with school staff as different needs arise (e.g. Contacting your Head of Year and/or Form Tutor to get assistance with login information or asking for hard copies to be posted)

  • Understand that personal or sensitive information should not be shared online

  • Know that your teachers will be in contact with parents/carers if you are not submitting work as requested

Here are some rules for students during remote live lessons:

  • Have your subject exercise book and equipment ready

  • Where possible, please sit against a neutral background.

  • Please mute your microphone on entering the online lesson and follow instructions from your Tutor/Teacher.

  • Please try to be in a shared space in your house, where possible, rather than in your bedroom.

  • Please dress appropriately.

  • Please be mindful that other children/staff may see or hear you and anything in the background.

  • If you do not want your image on screen, please turn your camera off.

Additional support for students with particular needs

We recognise that some pupils, for example some students with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), may not be able to access remote education without support from adults at home. We acknowledge the difficulties this may place on families, and we will work with parents and carers to support those pupils in the following ways:

Students with EHCPs

Students with EHCPs have the opportunity to come into school if this is the best option for them. Their Teaching Assistant will be in school to work with them to support them as they work through the day’s learning tasks.

If students with EHCPs are working from home, their TA will either call them or host a virtual meeting each day to make sure that he or she has understood the day’s tasks and to explain any areas about which they are unsure. The TA will be available for email support through the day.

Students without an EHCPs but on the send register

Teachers will provide tasks that can be accessed by all students and will offer additional support where required. If a student requires additional support, parents or carers should contact the class teacher in the first instance.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q: WHAT DO I DO IF I HAVE FORGOTTEN MY LOGIN DETAILS?

A: Please contact your Head of Year for assistance with this. For other learning platform logins, please email your class teacher.

Q: IF THERE IS A WHOLE SCHOOL CLOSURE, WHAT LESSONS DO I NEED TO JOIN REMOTELY?

A: Your teachers will add a link on your school email calendar. This will be required to join each lesson at the beginning of that lesson. Teachers will take a register. Period 6 will not be delivered live by your teachers. Use Period 6 to work independently, complete tasks set by your class teachers and use cognitive strategies to reinforce learning from the day's lessons.

Q: HOW DO I SUBMIT WORK IF IT NEEDS TO BE HANDWRITTEN AND/OR CAN NOT BE COMPLETED ONLINE?

A: Students should scan or take a photograph of the work and post this to Google Classroom or email it to the classroom teacher. Keep the work in your folder or book so that the teacher can mark it later, if necessary. Having the Google Classroom app on your phone can help to do this quicker.

Q: WHEN WILL SCHOOL WORK BE POSTED FOR MY LESSONS EACH DAY?

A: School work for the week’s lessons will be posted on Google Classroom at 8:45am on the morning of each day for all students to access.

Q: WHAT DO I DO IF I AM NOT RECEIVING WORK FOR A CLASS?

A: Contact the classroom teacher by email in the first instance and wait 24 hours for a reply before contacting your Head of Year.

Q: WHAT DO I DO IF I CAN NOT ACCESS THE INTERNET WHEN AN ASSESSMENT TASK IS DUE?

A: Communicate with your teacher via email as to the problem so you can discuss when you will be able to hand the work in. Assessment tasks have precedence over classwork; however, you should still be completing both.

Q: CAN I BE MARKED ABSENT?

A: Yes, please attend your daily lessons. If you are finding this difficult, please email your tutor or Head of Year so we can get you additional support if necessary.

The Academy must have evidence that students are engaging in online learning. This will be done by you returning tasks as requested by your teachers. You are required to complete the studies/assignments/tasks you have been set as evidence that you are actively engaging with your education.
