On Thursday, 13th February, our Year 9 gifted and talented maths students embarked on an educational adventure to Oxford University, Exeter College. The day began early, with the group setting off at 6am, filled with anticipation and excitement.
Upon arrival at Oxford University, the students were treated to a tour of the historic grounds. They marvelled at one of the buildings featured in the Harry Potter films, explored the beautiful chapel, and saw the renowned Bodleian Library. The morning continued with a stimulating maths workshop focused on vectors and car acceleration, providing the students with hands-on learning experiences.
After the workshop, the group enjoyed lunch at another part of the university before diving into an engaging afternoon session. The students participated in lively debates on thought-provoking topics such as "Is it ever right to lie?", "Should homework be banned?", and "Should cars be banned?". These debates encouraged critical thinking and allowed the students to express their opinions passionately.
The day concluded with a visit to the Oxford University Museum of Natural History, where the students were fascinated by the skeletons of dinosaurs, various animal exhibits, and other intriguing displays.
Following a restful night in Oxford, the adventure continued with a trip to Bletchley Park. Here, the students took part in a coding workshop, collaborating to uncover the name of a spy and getting the chance to see an original Enigma machine, valued at £300,000! The tour of Bletchley Park included various displays depicting office settings from the Second World War, as well as a walk around the grounds, including the manor house and garages showcasing vehicles from the era.
The trip was a fantastic experience for all involved, providing valuable learning opportunities and unforgettable memories. It was truly a worthwhile educational journey for our talented students.
