Ocean Explorers Discovering Chapel Woods: A Journey into Nature’s Hidden Treasures

24 Sept 2024

This year we have new team of dedicated Ocean Explorers who embarked on an exciting expedition to Chapel Woods. Nestled in the heart of North Devon, this enchanting woodland is a haven for nature enthusiasts, offering a rich tapestry of plant life, fungi, and more.

As the students ventured deeper into the woods, we were greeted by a vibrant array of plant species. From towering oaks and ancient yews to delicate wildflowers carpeting the forest floor, Chapel Woods is a botanical wonderland. Our explorers documented various plants, noting their unique characteristics and the vital roles they play in the ecosystem.

One of the highlights of the journey was discovering the diverse fungi that thrive in Chapel Woods. These fascinating organisms, often overlooked, are crucial for nutrient cycling and forest health. We encountered everything from the common bracket fungi clinging to tree trunks to the elusive and colourful Amanita muscaria, adding a touch of magic to our exploration.

While our primary focus was on the flora and fungi, we couldn’t help but notice the vibrant wildlife that calls Chapel Woods home. Birds serenaded us from the treetops. These encounters reminded us of the interconnectedness of all living things within this ecosystem.

Our expedition to Chapel Woods was not just about discovery but also about fostering a deeper appreciation for nature. We hope that by sharing our experiences, we can inspire others to explore and protect these precious natural spaces. Chapel Woods is a testament to the beauty and complexity of our natural world, and it is our responsibility to ensure it remains unspoiled for future generations.

More news next week as our Ocean Explorers continue their mission to explore and conserve the diverse ecosystems that make our planet so extraordinary.
